Tucker was born in
Conroe, Texas on28 June in 1944. Her parents are Eloise Lawson and Ernest J Johnson, both from Montgomery, Texas.As a child Tukcer sang with her mom and siblings (sister & brother) as The Johnson Family at their home church Jerusalem Baptist, as well as all over the Gulf Coast areas and. Many of the songs they sang were written by her mother Eloise.Tucker attended local Houston schools and graduated from
Texas Southern University . She later was a voice consultant in TSU's Fine Arts Department.She is married to __ Tucker and has son Christopher Tucker.
Career
Tucker is a popular
Houston based performer and producer. Her early notoriety came from being an anthem soloist atHouston Oilers footballl andHouston Rockets basketball games; as well as on local Christian TV.In 1969, Tucker ventured to NYC for one year and landed the only singing role in the 60-member cast of the
Tony award winning dramatic theatre play "The Great White Hope " which starredJames Earl Jones . She led the cast in a "congregation song" over the escapingJack Johnson . Also while in New York, she had her debut recital in the famedCarnegie Recital Hall and filmed several nationally-shown commercials.Tucker was privileged to sing at the 1989 state funeral of Congressman
Mickey Leland .In 1992, after returning home, she retired from her manager position at
Southwestern Bell Telephone Company . Her church then presented her in her first full-time ministry concert.Tucker gained international fame as the first artist to record the extremely popular "
Order My Steps " byGlenn Edward Burleigh . Tucker released an album that was awarded two Texas Gospel Music Awards in 1993: Best New Album and Song Of The Year. Tucker was privileged to sing at the 1996 state funeral ofUnited States House of Representatives memberBarbara Jordan .In September of 2000, she was presented in concert at
The Kennedy Center inWashington, D.C by Texas CongresswomanSheila Jackson Lee .In November of 2002, she sang atop the Turkey float in Houston’s annual Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Tucker’s ministry has spread abroad to England, Switzerland, Holland, Russia, Poland, Manger Square in Bethlehem and the Czech Republic.
Albums
Tucker manages and directs her 30 background singers "A Chosen Few". They have performed for the President of the United States and concertized throughout the south. Their first joint gospel CD is “So Precious!”. In August of 2002, they completed the 20-Piece-Christmas Cantata "Born To Die" by
Glenn Edward Burleigh .As a producer, Barbara has eleven recordings, including three gospel CD’s, three hymn projects, a Christmas tape, and her first “Patriotic Praise”.
Currently
Today, she is still based in Houston but travels the world singing. Her latest endeavor is "A Glimpse Of History", a DVD musical lecture on the history of the evolution of African American Music. Tucker is frequently found teaching with the DVD in Houston (and surrounding area) schools.
