Jacob Willem "Wim" Cohen (
August 27 ,1923 inLeeuwarden -November 12 ,2000 ) was a Dutch mathematician, well known for over hundred scientific publications and several books inqueueing theory .Having acquired an
autodidact knowledge of mathematics while in hiding duringWorld War II , Cohen got anEngineer's degree (1949) andPh.D. degree (1955) inmechanical engineering atDelft University , on a dissertation entitled "Stress Calculations in Helicoidal Shells and Propeller Blades". He worked asteletraffic engineer with the "Telecommunications group" atPhilips (1950-57), at theapplied mathematics department at Delft (1957-73) andUniversity of Utrecht (1973-1998).
