Dewi Sartika (December 4, 1884 in Bandung – September 11, 1947 in - Tasikmalaya), was the leading figure and pioneer for the education for women in Indonesia. She was acknowledged as a National Hero by the Indonesian government in 1966.
Biography Dewi Sartika was born into a Sundanese family, to parents Nyi Raden Rajapermas and Raden Somanagara. Despite the prevailing traditions and customs of the time, Dewi Sartika's parents chose to educate her, moreover at a Dutch school. After the death of her father, Dewi's welfare was looked after by her uncle (her mother's brother) who was the governor of Cicalengka. From her uncle, Dewi Sartika received her education in Sundanese culture. Dewi Sartika was given an insight into Western culture by the assistant resident of the governor's house, himself a Dutchman.
