Tau Alpha Omega is a service and social fraternity/sorority organization of the Philippines. It was founded at Central Mindanao University in 1970.

History

Founding

Tau Alpha Omega was founded on September 21, 1970. Chapters were later created at universities and colleges in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. In the 1960s, before it became Tau Alpha Omega, the organization was known as the Free Student Society, Society of Students who Assert Freedom or "Scholasticus Adserto Sodalicium". Each member was known as a "Freeman." Because its constitution and bylaws were similar to that of fraternities and sororities, it was amended in the 1970 constitution and bylaws of the FFS to use the three Greek letters "TAΩ".

Objectives

ARTICLE II Section 1 - 7

Tau Alpha Omega possesses seven objectives. Each of the objectives represents each letter in the word FREEMAN based on its ARTICLE II Section 1 - 7 in its Constitution and Bylaws.

#To arouse the fellowship pursuant to the objectives of Brotherhood and Sisterhood.
#To make more dignified and responsible man and woman in the community in the essence of righteousness.
#To promote general welfare through the blessings of equality and liberty.
#To promote better education through effective and sound student-faculty relationship, unity and contact between students.
#To stimulate the interest of management and leadership in matters involving social and/or cultural affairs both locally and nationally.
#To cooperate with the administration in imposing rules and regulations of the academic institution and/or the nation as a whole.
#To render assistance and services to all members in case of needs, i.e illness, hunger, and wants.

The Freeman's song

Born Free

Born free, as free as the wind blows
As free as the grass grows
Born free to follow your heart
Live free and beauty surrounds you
The world still astounds you
Each time you look at a star
Stay free, where no walls divide you
You're free as the roaring tide
So there's no need to hide
Born free, and life is worth living
But only worth living
'cause you're born free
(Stay free, where no walls divide you)
You're free as the roaring tide
So there's no need to hide
Born free, and life is worth living
But only worth living
'cause you're born free

Motto

"As I have not been a Slave, so I shall not be a Master"

Traditions

Tau Alpha Omega is the only fraternity and sorority to be "free from slavery." Because Tau Alpha Omega believes that all people are "born free," it does not require that pledges render services to full members. Tau Alpha Omega focuses on projects to help the communities within which Freemen exist all over the Philippines. Tau Alpha Omega exists because of its strong foundation in helping and serving communities, especially local governments.
