History

Szerencs was first mentioned in the Middle Ages. In the 15th century it was already a town, its owners were the Rákóczi family. In 1605 István Bocskai was elected ruling prince of Hungary here.

In the 18th century the town began to develop fast, but the developing slowed down in the 19th century, and in 1876 Szerencs lost its town status. The industrialization helped to speed up development again. The sugar factory (the largest one in Europe at that time) was opened in 1889 and in 1923 the famous chocolate factory of Szerencs was opened too. In 1930 the village had almost 7000 residents.

After World War II Szerencs became the administrative centre of the Szerencs district. During the Socialist era the role as Szerencs as an important centre of food industry was strengthened, a bread factory was opened and a machine factory was built too.

Szerencs regained its town status in 1984.
