Dalli (Surname)

Dalli is a surname found all over the world, typically in Europe and America.

History of the name

The name Dalli is an ancient name of habitation, coming from the Italian province of Lucca. A noble family of the Mutina region owned an estate in the province of Lucca, today known as the cities of Sillano. This noble family habituated in two hamlets which where built in the nearby mountains called Dalli Sopra (Upper) and Dalli Sotto (Lower), thus, obtaining the family title of Dalli.

During the 12th century Modena was ruled by the Kingdom of Naples while the province of Lucca was ruled by the House of Savoy. Thus, explaining the necessity of having a northern and southern hamlet for the family of Dalli. This piece of information brings together the two coat of arms which surround the name of Dalli. One being the coat of arms of Dalli Sopra, and the other being the coat of arms of Dalli Sotto. The Crest of Dalli Sopra includes the colors Red and Yellow, representing the colors of the Aragonese Kingdom of Naples, who ruled the area of Modena at the time. The crest of Dalli Sopra is known to have a lot of variations including symbols of The Kingdom of Aragona namely horses and lions, both of which where known symbols of the Kingdom of Aragona. The Crest of Dalli Sotto includes the colors Red and White, representing the colors of the House of Savoy, who governed the province of Lucca in the century 1100, presumably when the hamlet was established.

The Crest of Dalli Sotto is one which bears an eagle storming out of the ground together with flames. The meaning behind this crest is unknown but the eagles at the time symbolized great power and unity with the spirits above. The family was known to be allied with the city of Reggio Emilia. A controversy was known to be born between the members of the nobility during the 1200's which is presumably the reason that the family no longer remained in the same area but moved to other areas or over seas. It is seen that bearers of the family name Dalli which lived in Dalli Sopra moved to northern areas, such as the city of Reggio Emilia where it is noted that several Dalli's Habituated in the 1300's. It is also seen that bearers of the family name Dalli which lived in Dalli Sotto moved over seas and towards southern areas, thus responsible for the number of miss spelt versions of the name which appear in numerous lists in the 1400's in the areas ruled by the Kingdom Of Naples, such as Spain, southern Italy, Sicily, and other islands off the coast of Sicily.

Today Dalli is a name which spreads over all of Europe and overseas to other continents, including thousands of misspelt versions of the Original name.
