It was established in 1992 as the Master ofPublic Policy Programme under the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences of National University of Singapore in collaboration with theKennedy School of Government ofHarvard University . The school was formally launched on 16 August 2004.Mission Statement
To help build capacity in governance by providing opportunities for the education and training of policy-makers and leaders in the art and science of public policy and public management, with the objective of raising the standards of governance and improving the lives of the people in the region.
Degree Programs
Master in Public Policy
The 2-year Master in Public Policy (MPP) programme is geared towards developing the conceptual and analytical skills for future public service leaders and individuals with an interest in understanding and influencing how public policy choices are made. Typical MPP candidates have five or less years of working experience prior to beginning their coursework.
Master in Public Administration Programme
The 1-year Master in Public Administration Programme (MPA) was started in 2006 and enrolls experienced professionals who wish to acquire new knowledge and skills to enhance their leadership and managerial capabilities.
Master in Public Management
The one-year Master in Public Management (MPM) programme was first offered in 2001 to enhance the skills of senior managers working in the public, people and private sectors in the area of good governance. It is targeted at accomplished senior officials who hold key positions, and whose leadership role is acknowledged within their own organisation.
Doctor of Philosophy
The PhD programme seeks to strengthen the capability and effectiveness of public policy research. It will equip candidates with the necessary theoretical frameworks, research methods and tools to conduct scientific inquiry to address contemporary public policy issues.
Dual Degree Programs
As a member of the Global Public Policy Network (GPPN), LKYSPP Master in Public Policy students have the opportunity to enroll in a double degree programme with either
Columbia University ,London School of Economics and Political Science or the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po ). Their second year of study will be at one of the partner institutions. Students who meet the double degree requirements will graduate with a Master in Public Policy degree from the National University of Singapore and either a Master of Public Administration degree fromColumbia University , a Master in Public Administration degree fromLondon School of Economics and Political Science , or a Master of Public Affairs degree from Sciences Po.LLB (Hons) and MPP Concurrent Degree Program
LKYSPP and the NUS Faculty of Law have also launched the prestigious concurrent degree programme in Law (LLB) and Public Policy (MPP) in Academic Year 2007-2008. [http://www.nus.edu.sg/prog/mpplaw] Admission to this programme is highly competitive and selective - applicants to the programme must possess an outstanding academic record and must pass through a rigorous interview selection process. [http://www.nus.edu.sg/prog/mpplaw/admission.htm] The programme combines the renown strengths of the LKYSPP and the NUS Faculty of Law to prepare students for the complex world of policy-making and public service. It offers law students, especially those interested in a future career in public service, a unique opportunity to understand the legal, policy, and practical dimensions of governance and national, regional, and international policy-making.
Out of the sea of applicants, only two law students were admitted in the inaugural year of this prestigious progamme. This includes Terence Tan Zhong Wei, an eminently bright student who has excelled in his legal studies. Asia Competitiveness Institute
The Asia Competitiveness Institute (ACI) was established in 2006 to build the intellectual leadership and network for understanding and developing competitiveness in the
ASEAN region. ACI seeks to contribute to the enhancement of economic growth and living standards in the region. It serves as a regional repository of competitiveness information that enables analyses of long-term trends in economic policies and development. It conducts research to understand patterns of policy and economic development, and develops models that are applicable to different contexts. It also undertakes projects to assess current competitiveness of key economic clusters and provide policy inputs for enhancing growth. The ACI is an affiliated institute of the Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness atHarvard University .Centre on Asia and Globalisation
in shaping globalisation forces.
Institute of Policy Studies
The Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) is a think-tank dedicated to fostering good governance in Singapore through strategic policy research. It focuses on Singapore’s domestic developments and external relations taking a multidisciplinary approach with an emphasis on long-term strategic thinking. Established in 1988, IPS merged with the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy in 2007.
The Asian Journal of Public Affairs
The
Asian Journal of Public Affairs (AJPA) is a web-based, biannual academic publication regarding public affairs issues pertaining to Asia and the Oceania region. Spearheaded by graduate students from theLee Kuan Yew School, AJPA was established to analyze policy-making within Asia through an interdisciplinary lens. From Policy to Research Lecture Series
The
World Bank -Lee Kuan Yew From Research to Policy Lecture Series was established in 2007 to provide students with a deeper understanding of real life challenges in development research from prominent academics and decision-makers and to facilitate learning across continents intended for research and policy audiences with several schools of public policy in Asia and Europe. The first lecture was brought together 200 students from 12 universities in 4 countries to hear World Bank Country Director for China, David Dollar, speak on research methodologies for analyzing the impact of trade and financial liberalization policies in Asia.Noteworthy Alumni

The Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy moved from Heng Mui Keng Terrace in December 2006, located at the main campus of the National University of Singapore. There it shared an office park with the Institute for Policy Studies,
World Intellectual Property Organization , andAsia-Pacific Economic Cooperation . It is now situated at theBukit Timah campus, next to NUS’ Law Faculty, and is based primarily in the Manassah Meyer and Oei Tiong Ham buildings.ingapore
