A small plaque on the building describes the building's place in the history of telecommunications, when a beam of light was first used to transmit sound waves using the photophone, invented by Alexander Graham Bell.

It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1996.citation|title=PDFlink| [http://pdfhost.focus.nps.gov/docs/NHLS/Text/73002085.pdf National Historic Landmark Nomination: Franklin School / Benjamin Franklin Schoolhouse] |32 KB|date=December 31, 1994 |author=Tanya Edwards Beauchamp and Carolyn Pitts |publisher=National Park Service and PDFlink| [http://pdfhost.focus.nps.gov/docs/NHLS/Photos/73002085.pdf "Accompanying nine photos, exterior and interior, from c.1868, c. 1901, 1903, and 1995 and undated"] |32 KB]
