Richard Franz Marian Yary (Yaryga, a.k. as Karpat, and Riko Yary)(1898-1969)
One of the highest functionaries of the
OUN . Born inAustria-Hungary , according to the Ukrainian publicist P. Cheremys, he was of Hungarian-Jewish extraction and was married toR. Schpiegelvogel . In 1912 he completed his studies in the Military Academny inVienna . In the years of WWI 1914-18 he was an officer in th 9th Dragoons Legion of theAustrian Army . In 1918 he went over to the side of theUkrainian Galician Army UHA and commanded a sniper division and later the 2nd cavalry. In 1919 he fought with the 5th Kherson battalion of theUkrainian National Republic . In 1920 as part of the battalion he was interned inCzechoslovakia and was in an internment camp inUzhhorod . From 1921-29 he was an active member of theUkrainian Military Organization UVO , one of the closest advisers toYevhen Konovaletz . In 1920's he directed th espionage courses of the UVO organized by theAbwehr . In January 1929 he took part in theFirst Congress of Ukrainian Nationalists in Vienna where the formation of the Organization of Ukrainian NationalistsOUN was announced. From 1932-33 he had numerous meeting withE. Rem . From 1937-38 he became the communications officer between Yevhen Konovaletz and admiralV. Kanaris of theAbwehr . He became an agent of the Special services, and was the informant for discussions between Y. Konovaletz and the Japanese Military Attache. Yary was the instigator that led to the pre-WWII division of the OUN. After the division he stayed with the OUN(b) (Bandera faction). In November 1940 he made contact with Bandera with the Abwehr and set up theVienna Bureau of thw OUN(b) and at his initiative formed the Nachtigall andRoland Battalion . After theProclamation of Ukrainian Independence he was given the porfolio of Ambassador to Japan. In 1942 he lived inBessarabia , actively criticised the formation of theUIA in the occupational Ukrainian press. In 1943 he was arrested by theGestapo and was sent to theSachsenhausen concentration camp. After the war he settled in Austria in the Soviet occupational sector which has led to the suggestion that he was worked the Soviet organs. After the war he left political life.Notes
