Chris Hutchinson (American football)

Chris Hutchinson was an All-American defensive tackle for the Michigan Wolverines football team from 1989 to 1992. A native of Houston, Texas, Hutchinson starred at Cypress Creek High School. He played in 48 games for the University of Michigan—39 as a starter. He had his best season as a senior in 1992, when he was the team's co-captain, received the team's Most Valuable Player award as well as the Dr. Arthur D. Robinson Scholarship Award (given to the team's leading senior scholar), and was named an All-American and Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year. In 1992, Hutchinson also set the school's single season record for quarterback sack yardage with 99 and tied the single season sack record with eleven. In addition to his athletic performance, Hutchinson also performed at a high level academically, being named to the Academic All-Big Ten team three times and becoming an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship winner. Hutchinson used his NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship to attend the University of Michigan Medical School upon graduation.^[1]

In an article published in The New York Times in October 1999, Hutchinson recalled the Michigan State rivalry: "Notre Dame and Ohio State were rivalries, but Michigan State was a war, almost a civil war, a real hatred. We out and out didn't like each other.^[2]

The Detroit News recently published a list of the Top Michigan athletes by jersey number in any professional or collegiate sport. Hutchinson was selected as the best athlete to wear number 97.^[3]
