Rev-Ola Records

'Rev-Ola Records' is a UK record label specialising in reissues. It was originally a subsidiary of the Creation Records publishing arm, Creation Songs, in which guise it also issued spoken word recordings by William Shatner and Ivor Cutler, as well as first time reissues by favoured artists among the Creation Records inner circle, such as Fred Neil and Yma Sumac. The label was headed from the outset by Joe Foster, a former child actor who was a member of both Biff! Bang! Pow! and The Television Personalities and co-founder of Creation Records. He continues to oversee the label, though it has since come under the Cherry Red Records umbrella.

“I was involved in publishing and producing records at Creation. We just did this, basically, because the people there loved old, rare, bizarre records from here, there and everywhere. Quite often we’d spend a lot of time making up tapes of these things, and people would spend a lot of money finding these records. At the same time we were researching the artists for fun – sometimes I’d do it, or Ed Ball would do it – old and unusual bands from other countries that we were going to put out or publish . . . It was always very eclectic,” Foster stated in 2008. “It carried on being so when we were doing PopTones [Foster and McGee’s post-Creation digital label started in 1999] . We did things like The Byrds’ 'Pre-Flight' and The Millennium records. We got there first! We got to know all those people from The Millennium and the Byrds, and we put their records out. And when Cherry Red took over distribution of Rev-Ola, we were able to continue with basically the same deal because we had all those contacts.” [1]

Rev-Ola continues to release reissues of recordings from the 1950s, through the 1990s, as well as a range of new recordings, some by Creation Records associated artists (including Foster’s own sobriquet Slaughter Joe). Other executives at the label include art director and songwriter Andy Morten, mastering engineer Norman Blake (of Teenage Fanclub) and graphic artist and reissue producer Steve Stanley (who has subsequently formed another Cherry Red-administered label, Now Sounds)
