Route 277 started in April 1959 to replace the Trolleybus replacement Route from Smithfield to Cubitt Town Stebondale Street. Later in October 1961, route 277 has a Sunday service extended from Cubitt Town to Poplar replacing the withdrawn 56 on this day. This was to follow on
1964 where Saturday's were also extended. Later again this was to follow on an extension to services happening everyday in1969 .Route 277 saw the withdrawal on Sunday services between
Angel Islington and Smithfield but continued a normal service to PoplarBlackwall Tunnel . Also in1971 there was then the withdrawal of the 277 going any further thenMildmay Park but there was an extension to the Poplar Baths at the same time.Route 277 saw the withdrawal of services to Poplar and restricted to Cubitt Town, Queen Hotel in
1974 then this was put back to normal in1976 after Route 277A which took over that part of the line was withdrawn. Then in1982 the route would only go as far as Smithfield on Weekdays except the evenings and Saturdays but would be restricted toAngel Islington on Weekday evenings and Sundays.1989 saw the withdrawal of routes to Poplar only allowing a rare service on Sundays while services were withdrawn back toLimehouse because of the new bus route D7.1990 saw the most significant change to the route where the route was diverted at Canonbury (Mildmay Park) via St Pauls Road to Highbury & Islington Station; the Smithfield section was replaced by bus route 56.1991 saw the extension on weekdays and Saturdays toCanary Wharf .1993 saw the withdrawal of the section betweenCanary Wharf and Poplar. In1994 the route was extended toLeamouth on weekdays and Saturdays.2003 saw the extension to Leamouth on Sundays and also the introduction of night bus route N277.From June 2008 for 15 weeks there are gas works on St Paul's Road causing major diversions eastbound only. Buses are diverting down Canonbury Road and Essex Road respectively, re-routing the bus to parts of its original route.
