Roin Metreveli (Georgian: როინ მეტრეველი ) is Academician, Historian.He was the first elected rector of the Tbilisi State University, after Petre Melikishvili and Ivane Javakhishvili. He was major editor of the Georgian Encyclopedia.He is author of more than 300 Scientific publications and books about Georgian History and Caucasiology. For several years, he was member of the Georgian Parliament.He was Chairman of the Board of Rectors of all Georgian Universities.

Early life and Career

Roin Metreveli was born in 1939 in Abastumani, in family of Victor Metreveli and Nino Tatunashvili. His parents got married in Tbilisi in 1938 and lived there for one year. In 1939 Young Family moved to Abastumani, because Victor became Director of Hydro-Meteorological Centre. This is why Roin Metreveli was born in Abastumani. In winter 1944 family of Roin Metreveli was traveling to Kutaisi. On the way they had an accident where Victor had to lie in snow whole night, he was only found in morning. After this accident father of Roin Metreveli had health problems. In March 1945, very young 29 year old Victor died. So Roin and his mother moved to Kutaisi and lived there by his grand parents. Kutaisi is the city where he spent his youth. In 1957 he finished school IV in Kutaisi with Honors (Gold Medal), and same year was accepted in Tbilisi State University. He wrote 10 works already in Tbilisi State University and graduated with honours in 1962. He did his candidacy work in 1965, from same year he started to work in Tbilisi State University. In year 1969 he became "docent" of science.

Social and Political Career

Parallel to his Scientific and University work Roin Metreveli was actively involved in Politics. In years 1960-1972 he was Secretary of central committee, First Secretary of central committee of Communist Union of Youth of Georgia. After that he was chief of organizational department of central committee of Georgian Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Candidate for Bureau Membership.

Georgian Encyclopedia

In year 1972 Roin Metreveli was appointed at Georgian Soviet Encyclopedia, as deputy of Chief Editor (Poet – Irakli Abashidze). These two people (Irakli Abashidze and Roin Metreveli) made it happen that in 1975-87 years twelve volumes of Georgian Soviet Encyclopedia were published.In 1974 Roin Metreveli defended his scientific work for "candidacy" about middle ages of Georgian history.In years 1986-1989 Metreveli was Rector of Tbilisi Pedagogical institute (which had name of Pushkin at that time)In 1988 he became the Scientific Secretary of Georgian Academy of Science and in same year he became member of Presidium of Georgian Academy of Science.Since 1990 he was Chief Editor of Magazine of Georgian Academy of Science called "MATSNE".

Tbilisi State University

In 1991 Roin Metreveli was appointed as Rector of Tbilisi State University. In 1992 through his hard work and pressure, Tbilisi State University regained their status as automomus institution, what was lost Since 1926. From that moment when Tbilisi State University became Autonomous, Great Scientific Council was reenstated and this council had to chose new executive. In April 1992 new council elected Roin Metreveli as Rector of Tbilisi State University. He was the first elected rector after great Petre Melikishvili and Ivane Javakhishvili. In 1997 Professor Roin Metreveli was elected for second term as a rector.
