Henry Thornton is an independent Australian online news and culture magazine created in 1999 to provide an independent view-point on the goings on in the worlds of politics, commerce, world affairs the arts and any area that is creating column inches. Henry Thornton occupies part of the same online media space that other new media magazines in Australia, like Crikey, have opened up Australian audiences to new opportunities to seek out and learn about what is going on in society. Henry Thornton is named for the one of the famed founders of the Clapham Sect, and prominent abolitionists Henry Thornton - a prominent economist, banker, philanthropist and parliamentarian of late 18th and early 19th Century Great Britain.

Henry Thornton brings together the views from a wide array of contributors with experience and expertise across a diverse range of different fields. Contributors include respected economist and founder Peter Jonson, Chief Executive of Roy Morgan Research, Michele Levine, the late distinguished political commentator PP McGuinness, Executive Director of the Institute of Public Affairs, John Roskam, Chief Economist of the ANZ, Saul Eslake, Former CEO of Western Mining Corporation (WMC) and former member of the Board of Directors of the Reserve Bank of Australia, Hugh Morgan, respected policy adviser, diplomat and professor, Ross Garnaut and owner and executive director of Roy Morgan Research, Gary Morgan. Origin of Henry Thornton

Henry Thornton was founded in 1999 by respected professional director and economist Peter Jonson. Peter has in the past been chairman of ANZ Funds Management, Group Managing Director of Norwich Union Australia and Financial Services and Head of Research at James Capel Australia. Between 1972–1988, Peter held a number of senior positions at the Reserve Bank of Australia as an economist under Sir John Phillips (1972-1975), Sir Harold Knight (1975-1982) and Bob Johnston (1982-1988) [ [http://www.rba.gov.au/AboutTheRBA/History/rba_board_members.html Reserve Bank Board Members through the years] ] . Peter was Chairman of the Melbourne Institute Advisory Board between 1992-2002, and now serves as Chair Emeritus whilst running the day-to-day operations of Henry Thornton
