"Emily" is the ninth episode of the first season of "Journeyman", and the first half of a two-episode story concluding in "Blowback." The episode is named for the kidnap victim tracked in the episode.

Plot

While jogging, Dan travels back to a rave in 1992. Dan notices a loose brick wall, and begins opening a hole large enough to pass through. On the other side, Dan finds Emily – a 12-year old foster child who had gone missing and, in his timeline, was never found. As Dan takes her outside, she points out to him the man who kidnapped her. The police arrive to break up the rave before Dan can act, and the man runs off. The police recognize the girl as a missing person and arrest Dan for kidnapping before the girl can speak. Once she tells them Dan was not her captor, he has vanished.

In 2007 Katie speaks to an administrator at Herbert Wells Elementary School about Zack's recent misbehavior. She fears he may be acting out in response to his father's increasing absences. After the meeting, Katie finds Dan returned to the present in handcuffs. They head to a sex shop to find a key that opens the cuffs as they discuss the issue.

Meanwhile, FBI Agent Richard Garrity (Paul Schulze) speaks to Hugh about Dan's sources on the Dylan McCleen story, only to be told that Dan once went to jail instead of naming a source for a grand jury. Dan investigates Hugh's old file on the kidnapping and learns that Emily ran away from the foster home she was placed with, and that another foster girl was abducted in 2001 and turned up dead. He also finds a photo of the man Emily pointed out, identifying him as Aeden Bennett (Raphael Sbarge); a realtor and manager of the building where Emily was found.

As Dan asks Jack to interrogate Bennett, Jack asks Dan about the $20 bill Agent Garrity showed him in the previous episode. Dan mentions the cabby he passed it to, and Jack realizes that Dan might be telling the truth about his time travel. He agrees to question Bennett, but comes up with nothing.

Meanwhile, Dan travels to 1995 and finds Emily, now around 15 and a runaway. He and Livia take Emily to their old apartment for a meal, and convince her to go back into foster care. Dan decides to go after Bennett, against Livia's warnings that if he strays from his mission, it won't end well. Nevertheless, he tracks Bennett to his office where he finds him chatting with young girls on the newly popular internet. Dan confronts him, only to jump back to the present in the middle of a pursuit.

Back at home, Zach hits another boy in the schoolyard and gets suspended. After Katie punishes him, Zach hides in a cabinet, appearing to have run away. He explains that he thought if he disappeared, Dan would have to come save him.

Jumping to 2001, Dan and Livia find Emily dealing drugs in the park. Knowing she is about to be the subject of a drug bust, they convince her again to stop and get help from her last foster family. Dan leaves to stop Bennett against Livia's advice. He goes to the building Bennett is working on and again confronts him. He ties up Bennett, leaving him for the police, and rescues his victim.

Back in the present, Agent Garrity continues to investigate Dan, looking through his internet records, apparently illegally. Dan finds that Emily went on to open her own children's hair salon. He also learns that Bennett served six years in prison and is believed to have moved to Thailand. However, his changes have also had negative consequences. With Bennett in prison, Jack never helped Dan investigate him, and Jack never realized the truth about Dan, and wants him to see a psychiatrist. When Dan arrives home, Bennett is parked outside, unseen, watching him and his family.
