The bridge is actually owned by the National Park Service, but is leased to the railroad, CSX Transportation [citeweb|title=Anacostia Railroad Bridge Down - Again|work=NotionsCapital|url=http://notionscapital.wordpress.com/2007/11/10/anacostia-railroad-bridge-down-again/|accessdate=2007-11-20] The bridge has very little clearance below it, and this prevents boats from passing it in either direction. The first railroad bridge was built on this site by the Baltimore and Potomac Rail Road and opened on July 2, 1872.
In 2006, one of the three tracks across the bridge was removed. On November 10, 2007, a coal train derailed on the bridge, with some cars falling into the water, but the bridge was cleaned up quickly and reopened the following day.
