HMS "Melville" was a 74-gun
third rate ship of the line of theRoyal Navy , launched on17 February 1817 atBombay Dockyard .From
19 January 1836 until August 1837 she served inNorth America and theWest Indies as the flagship ofVice-Admiral Peter Halkett and was commanded by Captain Peter John Douglas. From1 September 1837 to 1841 she was the flagship ofRear-Admiral George Elliot and was captained byRichard Saunders Dundas , during this time she served at theCape of Good Hope and in theEast Indies and was present during theFirst Opium War withChina .
