Peter Victor Danckwerts GC, MBE, FRS (1916–1984) was Shell Professor of Chemical Engineering at
Cambridge University from 1959 to 1977 and a Fellow ofPembroke College, Cambridge .Peter Danckwerts was educated at
Winchester College ,Balliol College, Oxford , and theMassachusetts Institute of Technology [ [http://books.nap.edu/openbook.php?isbn=0309039398&page=112 Memorial Tributes: National Academy of Engineering, Volume 3 (1989)] ] .Serving as a sub-lieutenant in theRoyal Navy Volunteer Reserve , he was awarded theGeorge Cross cite web |url=http://www.gc-database.co.uk/recipients/DanckwertsPV.htm|title=Peter Victor Danckwerts, GC |publisher=George Cross database |accessdate=2007-11-23] in 1940 for the "great gallantry and undaunted devotion to duty" he showed in defusingland mines dropped by theLuftwaffe onLondon . Notice of his award appeared in the "London Gazette " of20 December 1940 . He was wounded in action in the liberation ofSicily and appointed an M.B.E. in 1943.References
