Bladin's International School

Bladin's International School is an international school associated with Bladins Skola, an old Swedish school founded in 1868 and located in the heart of Malmö, Sweden and is one of the oldest schools in Sweden. It offers education to students ranging from 3 to 19. The school itself consists of a Swedish Pre-School, a Compulsory School, Upper Secondary School and a International School. The international school is accredited by the International Baccalaureate Organization and offers the PYP (Primary Years Programme) & MYP (Middle Years Programme) programme, but not the Diploma Programme. The Diploma Programme, on the other hand, is offered by a nearby Swedish upper secondary school called Borgar Skolan. In 2008, Bladins was awarded as the best school in Sweden, as the international side ninth graders achieved the highest grade point average throughout the whole of Sweden.

History

Bladin's International School was in founded in 1987, due to an expanding Australian expatriate community and so the need for an international school was vital. The Australians had come to Malmö due to a signed contract between Kockums, the Swedish submarine and ship manufacturer, and the Royal Australian Navy to build submarines.

Founded in 1868, Bladins School is one of the oldest private schools in Sweden. With its origins as a preparatory school, Bladins offered a broad education in science, mathematics and modern languages and prepared its students for admission to State secondary grammar schools.

Many of the teachers who taught at the school at that time were specialists in the classical subjects. The origin of our logo, the lily in the coat of arms, was inspired by one of the secondary school teachers Lilja (which means `lily`) who became Bladins’ first principal. Vilhelm Bladin gave the school its name and was principal until the mid 1950s, when Sigurd Delling took over.

In 1957 Rosemarie and Stig Erikson co-directed the school. It was at this time that the school took the name Bladins to avoid confusion with another private school in the city.

The number of classes increased gradually and in the 1960s Bladins received permission to pursue teaching for nine forms. This occurred in parallel to the implementation of comprehensive schools in Sweden.

A few years later, Bladins added the upper secondary school. Due to the extraordinary curricula and success rate of its students, the government decided to offer subsidies to Bladins’ students, giving them the same beneficial allowances offered to students attending public upper secondary schools.

At this time, Bladins also started a pre-school which applied the educational philosophy of Maria Montessori. This remains a common thread for the compulsory school.

The International School was founded in 1987. At the time, Kockums, the Swedish submarine and ship manufacturer, won a contract to build submarines for the Australian navy. The region needed an International School for the Australian expatriate community. The International School was born.

Bladins International School now has over 240 students of 30 different nationalities, who are taught by experienced and qualified teachers from all over the world with English as their native language. It offers an international education for students between 3 and 16 years. All teaching is in English and under the umbrella of the International Baccalaureate Organisation ( [http://www.ibo.org IBO] ), which develops the IBO curriculum. The IBO is supported by the United Nations, and their goal is to overcome the barriers of religion, politics and culture through education.

Since 1995 Bladins International School is the only school in Sweden to be authorised by the IBO to teach the Middle Years Programme for pupils aged 11 to 16. Since 2000, it has been authorised to teach the Primary Years Programme for pupils aged 3 to 11. As an IB school, the education is similar to all other 1,895 IB world schools, based in 124 countries. The IB program ensures a consistent foundation for all pupils in need of international education no matter where the family is based.

Recently, the school has undergone important pedagogical developments. At the same time, the school environment and facilities have been substantially improved.

Over Bladins’ long history, the school continues to maintain its pedagogic excellence, meeting the demands of a growing multi-cultural community in the Oresund region.
