Brigadier General Sein Win (March 19, 1919 - June 29, 1993) was a Burmese military leader and politician. He served as the 7th Prime Minister from March 4, 1974 to March 29, 1977.

Biography

Win was born in Da Nyin Gone, Mawlamyaing, Mon State as the son of U Thin Myaing and Daw Pwal Kyu. He was educated in U Pyon Yin School, National Middle School, and Government High School in Dawei. In 1938 he passed ten standard from Shin Mahar Buddhist Gawtha School and in 1940 he attended Police Officer Training in Mandalay.

In 1942 he joined the Burma Independence Army. He was the commander of Southeastern Regional Military Command in 1962 with the rank of Brigadier General.

In 1943, he married Daw Mya Shwe, daughter of Captain Ba Pe and Daw Mone. The couple had eight children.

In 1962, he joined General Ne Win's military coup and became a member of the "Revolutionary Council". In 1964, he became "Minister for Construction and Public Work" in Ne Win's administration. In 1971, he also chaired the Burma Socialist Programme Party's Party Inspection Committee. On April 20, 1972, Win retired from army.

In 1974, he became Prime Minister of the newly proclaimed "Socialist Republic". In 1977, he was removed from office due to economic failure and became a member of the State Council of Burma, a position from which he retired in 1985.

He died in Yangon on June 29, 1993.
