Van Ness Avenue (originally known as Marlette Street [http://www.sfgov.org/site/planning_index.asp?id=24897 Area Plan: Van Ness Avenue] , The City & County of San Francisco.] ) is a north-south arterial thoroughfare in San Francisco, California that cut through Downtown from the Central Freeway towards the northern section of the city. It begins at Market Street near Civic Center, San Francisco, extending to the north and ends at the Fort Mason. One of the moststriking landmark along the way is the San Francisco City Hall. To the south after crosses Market Street, Van Ness Avenue becomes South Van Ness Avenue and continues south until it reaches Cesar Chavez Street. The part of the street between Lombard Street to Market Street is designated as US 101.
