Jon Principe (born
June 17 ,1977 ) is a mixed martial artist in the state of Wisconsin. He was born and raised inKenosha, Wisconsin .Early years
Principe started his martial arts training at the age of 15 in the art of ShoRei Ryu Karate, after 4 years he was introduced to the world of MMA by Dave Strasser of the Freestyle Academy.
Competition
Principe was one of Strasser's first students. After 3 years of training Principe took on the roll of assistant instructor and coach to the traveling team. At that point Principe approached Strasser with the idea of hosting their own set of MMA shows in the area, the Xtreme Brawl Series. These shows brought thousands of people in attendance and such MMA legends as Pat Miletich, Adrian Serrano, Jeremy Horn, Dan Severn, Matt Hughes, Monte Cox, Shonie Carter, Jeff Curran, Travis Fulton, Nick Agullar, Ben Rothwell, Dave Martinez, Mark Coleman, and others to Wisconsin to compete.
After 5 years under Strasser, Principe was offered a middleweight submission fight in an upcoming MMA show in the area. The show being Xtreme Brawl IV was being held at "The Wonder Bar" in
Twin Lakes, Wisconsin onJuly 7 ,2001 . After a victory, Principe was awarded the middleweight championship of XB 4 and was set to defend his championship at XB 5. A falling out between Strasser and Principe followed with Principe leaving the Freestyle Academy soon after. Principe stated in early 2007 that he has not spoken to him since. Soon after his leaving Strasser's academy he was offered a spot on the 2001 United States Pancration Team, The Gracie Invitational, and various other national competitions. Offers to train followed from Milwaukee to Iowa and as far as Texas. Principe retired from competition.Later Years
In 2003, Principe was inducted into the Universal Martial Arts Hall of Fame for his contributions to the sport of Mixed Martial Arts as a promoter, and in 2005 he was inducted to the Universal Martial Arts Hall of Fame as a competitor. Still in Kenosha, he trains and instructs now privately under "Jon Principe Fighting Systems".
