Last album = "Creator" (1988)
This album = "Lick" (1989)
Next album = "Lovey" (1990)"Lick" is the third album by
The Lemonheads and the last to feature founding memberBen Deily . It was released in 1989 and was the group's last album before signing to major label Atlantic. Due to a typo on the album itself, many believe that this record was actually released in 1988, but this appears to be false as the previous album, "Creator", was released. As with their first two albums, it was re-released as a CD in 1992, with two bonus tracks.Album information
As would become something of a trademark, the band's lineup featured some significant differences from both previous and later albums. While the band had officially broken up after recording their second album "Creator" in 1988, they were offered a chance to play on a European tour. In early 1989, the band reformed with
Evan Dando as the lead singer and drummer, Corey Loog Brennan and Ben Deily on guitars, andJesse Peretz on bass. Deily and Dando were still not getting along, and their personality clashes and technical difficulties in the studio meant that only 5 new original songs were recorded. To fill out the album, several earlier unreleased tracks, b-sides, and cover songs were added to the album. After completion, Deily left the band permanently, replaced on the band's subsequent European tour by Dando on guitars and Mark Natola on drums. Peretz, the other original member, would remain to record the bands next album, "Lovey", but he too would leave. From that point forward, frequent lineup changes would make the Lemonheads little more than an Evan Dando backing group.Reception
*"Q" (2/96, p.109) - "...the seeds of their future and mainstream successes were firmly sown...and about to emerge..."
*Melody Maker (12/16/95, p.32) - Recommended - "...the rapidly budding Dando [flexes] a burgeoning [songwriting] talent....the real killer here is "Luka," a wired rewrite ofSuzanne Vega 's ghastly, mawkish hit; [shows a] talent for melancholy recontextualisation of the oddest source material..."Track listing
