"Note:There are many places in Kerala with the name 'Kottappuram"'

Kottappuram is a part of the village Mulavana in Kollam District, situated in Indian State of Kerala. It has a population of nearly 1200. It is the 7th ward of the Perayam Panchayath. To the North it is bordered by Chittumala Chira (Chira means small lake in Malayalam), west by Onambalam Cut (a deep short canal to divert flood water from Chittumala chira to Asthamudi Lake).

History

As the name indicates the place is the other side of the fort (Kotta - Fort, Appuram - otherside), which was standing until the late 60's and later demolished for building Onambalam Cut. The mud fort was used by the local Mathilakam dynasty in the British era. It is believed to be settled by first half of the 18 century.

Politics

It is a strong hold of Communist Party of India (CPI), but for the last two terms represented by popular K Mohanan, whom is a member of Indian National Congress. The Church has some influence in the local politics and has an active KCYM unit. The left front rules the Perayam panchayath. In the last election the seat was taken over by CPI(M) from CPI but they managed to reach only in the third position with CPI supporting INC-K. INC-K came second.
