Alberto Masferrer was a
Salvadoran essayist ,fiction writer, andjournalist , best known for the development of thephilosophy ofVitalismo . He was born inAlegría (formerlyTecape ),Usulután onJuly 24 ,1868 . He did not receive a formaleducation , instead claiming to have been educated by "the university of life," but he did travel widely, having lived in severalCentral American countries, as well as inChile ,New York , and severalEurope an nations. During his public career, he served as anambassador ofEl Salvador inArgentina ,Chile ,Costa Rica , andBelgium , and served as aprofessor inGuatemala ,El Salvador ,Honduras ,Costa Rica ,Chile , andArgentina . Having served in the government ofArturo Araujo , he was sent intoexile inHonduras by thedictatorship ofMaximiliano Hernández Martínez following the uprising of 1932 known as theMatanza , dying that same year onSeptember 8 in the city ofTegucigalpa . (There are some uncertainties regarding his death, with some sources claiming that he died inEl Salvador , though these claims are in the minority.) He was well-respected during his life, having earned the praise of such major Salvadoran figures asArturo Ambrogi ,Miguel Ángel Espino ,Claudia Lars , andSalarrué .Vitalismo
Vitalismo was a
philosophical doctrine developed by Masferrer in several of hisessay s, particularly "El mínimum vital." This philosophy espouses the idea that all individuals, regardless ofgender or race, have the right to a basic standard of life, through equal access toeducation , work,food , and shelter. Through this philosophy, Masferrer also argued forpacifism , influenced by the efforts ofMahatma Gandhi . Vitalismo can be seen in many of Masferrer'sessays , as well as in hisnovella "Una vida en el cine".Partial bibliography
