University of Dhaka - commonly known as IBA - is the premier institution for business-education in Bangladesh. It was established in1966 in collaboration with theKarachi IBA, theFord Foundation , and Indiana University, Bloomington. Late Professor M.Safiullah was the founder-director of IBA.Founder
Professor M. Safiullah is considered as the father of business education in Bangladesh. During the Pakistani period Bangladesh (the then East Pakistan) did not have any institution giving MBA degree. Professor M. Safiullah dreamed the need of such education for Bangladesh and organized support to start IBA. The first group of faculty who later provided leadership to business education includes Dr. Mawdudur Rahman, Dr. Alimullah Miyan, Dr. Rahim Talukdar, Dr. Hafiz G.A. Siddiqui and Dr. M. Shamsul Haque. All had MBA from Indiana University, USA. Until 1971, there were seven faculty advisors from Indiana University to help in the development of the Institute.
History
From its inception until
1993 , IBA offered the MBA as its major academic program. In 1993, after a review initiated by Professor Dr. M Shamsul Haque (Former Director, IBA; and former Treasurer, Dhaka University), a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program was added. The BBA program is now one of the most coveted undergraduate programs in the country.IBA has so far had 15 BBA batches and 41 MBA batches. In
2007 , IBA has started an Evening Executive MBA (EMBA) program - replacing the existing evening-MBA. There are plans to revamp the BBA program (offering double majors, for example), too.Administration
Institute of Business Administration, governed by the 4th Statute of the
University of Dhaka , functions within the broad framework of policies, rules and regulations of the University. An 11-member Board of Governors provides the policy and administrative guidance for IBA. The Board of Governors is chaired by the Vice-Chancellor of University of Dhaka and it has the Director of IBA as its Member Secretary.IBA director

Currently
BBA andMBA are the two major academic programs offered by IBA. The BBA Program is a 120 credit full-time program which includes 4 years of classroom teaching and a mandatry 10 week internship program. The MBA is a 60 credit academic program with a mandatory 12 week internship requirement. Students are allowed to take part in the MBA program in either fulltime or part-time basis. In addition to BBA and MBA, IBA also awards
MPhil degree of the University of Dhaka and offers a 3-yearPhD program with course and thesis.Admission
Since the Government of Bangladesh subsidizes the highly credited academic programs of IBA, there is always a stiff competition to get into this institution. Thousands of interested candidates apply for a few hundred seats in each academic program in each session. There are minimum requirements to get into the BBA and the MBA program of the institute. Applicants who meet those minimum requirements are asked to appear at a written test, which tests their linguistic, quantitative and analytical skills. Applicants who have a minimum score in GMAT may be exempted from this written test. A selected group of candidates are invited for the interview based on the results of the written test or GMAT score. The final selection is made based on a combination of candidate's interview score and their score from the written test/GMAT.
