- USS Susanville (PC-1149)
USS "Susanville" (PC-1149) was a
patrol boat in the service of theUnited States Navy duringWorld War II .She was laid down as PC-1149 on
6 November 1943 at theDefoe Shipbuilding Company inBay City, Michigan ; launched on11 January 1944 ; and commissioned on22 June 1944. She sailed, via theMississippi River andNew Orleans, Louisiana , to theGulf of Mexico and conductedshakedown training out ofMiami, Florida . During her first year of service, "PC-1149" cruised the waters along the east coast of theUnited States and in theCaribbean Sea . She patrolled for German U-boats andescort ed coastal and Caribbeanconvoy s from port to port. The submarine chaser ranged as far north asNew York and as far south as Guantanamo Bay,Cuba . On13 June 1945 , about a week before the first anniversary of her active service, she transited thePanama Canal and joined thePacific Fleet . After stopping atSan Diego, California , and atPearl Harbor , she arrived atEniwetok in theCentral Pacific on28 July ; then sailed the following day for theMarianas . She reachedSaipan on1 August and remained there through the end of the war and into September. After a brief voyage toIwo Jima early that month, "PC-1149" returned to the Marianas and operated in that island group for a little more than a year. In November1946 , she returned, via Kwajalein and Pearl Harbor, to theUnited States , arriving at theColumbia River Reserve Fleet berthing area in Oregon in mid-December. On20 February 1947 , "PC-1149" was placed out of commission and berthed at Columbia River. On15 February 1956 , while still out of commission, she was named "Susanville", after a town inLassen County in northeasternCalifornia . Sixteen months later, on16 July 1957 , "Susanville" was transferred, on loan, to theNationalist Chinese Navy and was commissioned as "Hsi Kiang". She served theTaiwan Navy until30 June 1972 when she was transferred to theTaiwan Customs Service .References
