Anton (Emil) Kuerti (born
July 21 ,1938 , inVienna ,Austria ) is aCanadian pianist , music teacher, composer, and conductor. Since his performance of theGrieg Piano Concerto with theBoston Pops Orchestra at age 11, he has developed international recognition as a solo pianist, particularly focusing on the works ofBeethoven . Kuerti studied music at theLongy School of Music ,Cleveland Institute of Music and theCurtis Institute . His teachers includedArthur Loesser ,Rudolf Serkin andMieczysław Horszowski .Even with international recognition as a solo performer, Kuerti has also been generous in sharing his talents within Canada. A sometime peace activist, in Canada's 1988 federal election, Kuerti was the
New Democratic Party candidate inDon Valley North . He is an Officer of theOrder of Canada . In 2007 he joined the faculty at theSchulich School of Music atMcGill University inMontreal as visiting professor. In 2008 he was awarded the CanadianGovernor General 's lifetime artistic achievement award.Kuerti is also the artistic director of the Mooredale Youth Orchestras, a small Toronto-based set of three orchestras for children and young adults.
