Tubes (software)

Tubes (software)

Tubes was an application in beta developed by Tubes Networks (originally Adesso Systems) that combined file sharing and web publishing services.

Tubes users would create their own "tube" with which they could share files privately or publicly via the desktop or the web. Tube owners had control over who was able to access their tube. Tube members accessed files on their desktop (the downloadable software automatically synchronized files with each member of the tube) or via the tubesSite (a unique website for the tube).

Tube owners could create synchronized networks and publish rich media websites with a simple drag and drop (and with no knowledge of HTML, JavaScript or CSS). Tube members, and the general public if desired, could access and subscribe to content published in a Tube (via the web or the Tubes software client).

According to an official announcement on their website, as of January 31st, 2008, the Tubes Service will be discontinued. [http://forum.tubesnow.com/forums/thread/1403.aspx]

Origins of Name

Tubes software was not named after United States Senator Ted Stevens' famous "series of tubes" phrase, but rather the pneumatic tube best known from old bank drive-throughs. The inspiration for Tubes came out of a project at Adesso Systems, which realized that its distributed enterprise automation platform had a much broader application--it could be used to replicate any type of file or media via an instant private and secure network desktop to desktop. Later revisions opened up Tubes to the web.
