Martin MacDonald

Martin MacDonald (born June 14, 1977) is an award-winning Canadian conductor.

Symphony Nova Scotia

MacDonald has served as Resident Conductor of Symphony Nova Scotia since 2008, a position supported by the Canada Council for the Arts. During the past two seasons he has conducted over seventy performances, led the orchestra on tour, covered all concerts and repertoire, and several of his performances have been recorded and broadcast nationally on CBC Concerts on Demand.[1] His upcoming third season sees an increased performance schedule of classical, ballet, pops, and education programs including his debut on the flagship Celebrity series.[2]

In 2010, MacDonald was awarded the Jean-Marie Beaudet Award in Orchestral Conducting, awarded by the Canada Council for the Arts for his work with Symphony Nova Scotia.[3]

National Academy Orchestra of Canada

MacDonald served as Associate Conductor of the National Academy Orchestra of Canada (based in Hamilton, Ontario), Boris Brott, Artistic Director for three seasons. Some memorable performances with the NAO included Debussy's La Mer, Beethoven's Third, Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Symphonies, Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, and Gershwin's Piano Concerto in F with pianist Stewart Goodyear – MacDonald conducted on every performance in repertoire ranging from classical, ballet, opera, pops, education, and contemporary repertoire including world premieres of some works. In 2009, MacDonald returned to the NAO to guest conduct two different programs.[4]

In addition to his conducting roles with the NAO, MacDonald managed the orchestra and played a key role in programming, artistic development, auditions, and coordination of this national training program.[5]
