Odessa to a Russian-Jewish family, Judah Waten arrived inWestern Australia in 1914. [cite web

He wrote novels, short stories and a history of theGreat Depression in Australia. He was a member of theCommunist Party of Australia in the 1950s, travelling to theSoviet Union several times, and remained left-leaning throughout his life. He was an involved in the Realist Writers Group,International PEN , theFellowship of Australian Writers and served on the Literature Board of theAustralia Council .
