University of York , home to the English and Educational Studies departments and the first college (along with Derwent) to be opened in 1965 following the university's foundation in1963 . It was opened by the Queen.Not a heavily populated college, Langwith is known to most students by virtue of its facilities - its
snack bar , for instance, is a common meeting venue, and its new (as of 2006) lecture theatre with retractable seating, which is often used for functions such as theBattle Of The Bands and shows by theGilbert & Sullivan society, as well as Mixed Martial Arts,Capoeira and Dance societies. Other notable features include an art gallery and a giant chess set. Langwith has one of the largestJunior Common Room Committees in the University. It has a strong rivalry withDerwent College and in 2005 it won the university's college sport league.Langwith College is broken into several blocks on the main campus numbered A-D and also has blocks in the joint Derwent-Langwith (occasionally referred to as 'Derwith') extension, forming E and F block.
Langwith College Bar is planned to be closed and replaced by a student-run venue operated by the
students' union .JCRC
Langwith has a Junior Common Room Committee (JCRC) responsible for representing Langwith students, organising events & looking after students' welfare. The chair of the college is Zach Pepper. Langwith's vice-chairs are currently Chris O'Brien and Mary Mason, who also act as the college's social secretaries and returning officers.
