The second USS "Porter" (DD-59), named for David Porter and
David Dixon Porter , was a "Tucker"-classdestroyer in theUnited States Navy duringWorld War I . She later served in theUnited States Coast Guard as CG-7."Porter" was laid down by
William Cramp and Sons ,Philadelphia, Pennsylvania ,24 February 1914 ; launched26 August 1915 ; sponsored by Miss Georgiana Porter Cusachs; and commissioned17 April 1916 , Lieutenant CommanderWard K. Wortman in command.After shakedown in the
Caribbean , "Porter" sailed inconvoy 24 April 1917 escorting the first U.S. troops toEurope . She arrived atQueenstown, Ireland ,4 May , where she was based during World War I, meeting and escorting convoys from the U.S. as they entered the war zone. Kept busy as a convoy escort, she severely damaged U–108,28 April 1918 , while the Germansubmarine was steaming to intercept a convoy. Operating from Brest after14 June , she returned to the United States at the end of the war.After World War I "Porter" operated off the East Coast and was decommissioned
23 June 1922 . Transferred to the Coast Guard,7 June 1924 , to serve in theRum Patrol , she was returned to the Navy30 June 1933 , and disposed of by scrapping under the terms of the 1930 London Treaty for Limitation of Armament the following year. Her name was struck from the Navy List5 July 1934 and her materials were sold22 August 1934 .ee also
