WXAV (88.3 FM) is a radio station broadcasting a Album Adult Alternative format. WXAV plays music that is usually not played on commercial radio stations. WXAV also offers Christian Programming on Sundays and is affiliated with the Chicago Fire of the MLS. Licensed to Chicago, Illinois, USA, it serves the Chicago area. The station is currently owned by Saint Xavier University.

1. To act as an outreach arm of Saint Xavier University by promoting services, activities and events of the University.2. To provide a practical training ground for members of the SXU community, especially students, interested in broadcasting.3. To entertain our audience with music and non-music programming.4. To inform our audience about local, national, and international news and events.

Format

The station's music format is officially registered as "alternative," but this title does not resemble the commercial radio format of the same name. The station's music is hand-picked by DJs on air and also takes in listener requests. The music tends to be rock music from the 1960s on, including metal, punk, indie, and industrial, with specialty programs through out the week that feature Jazz and Classical music. WXAV has been playing local and unsigned bands since its inception.

The syndicated British rock program Britsound started on WXAV, where its host Rob Quicke ran the Student Media Dept of SXU until June 2007. WXAV also airs the internationally syndicated rock program Danko Jone's Magical World of Rock and the live alternative rock performance series Universal Series. WXAV airs the award-winning public affairs program, God Matters which is produced in conjunction with the Sisters of Mercy, who founded Saint Xavier University. Classical music is featured on Saturday mornings and afternoons with DJ Rob Kinsella. Jazz and blues are featured on Wednesday nights.

The station also airs sports talk on Tuesdays with the only soccer-specific talk show in Chicago, Chicago Fire Soccer Weekly. The 30 minute talk show is co-produced with the Major League Soccer team who compete in Bridgeview, Illinois. WXAV also airs the pro wrestling entertainment talk show, Rumble Radio, which has featured interviews with big wrestling stars such as Mick Foley, Ted DiBiase, Samoa Joe, Terry Taylor, and Colt Cabanna. WXAV also airs SXU sports that include Men's Football and basketball. WXAV airs Women's basketball games. Another sports show, the sports bar, airs every Thursday from 9 pm to 12 am weekly from Gilhooley's Grand Saloon on the Campus of Saint Xavier University. The show is hosted by Sports Director Terry Bonadonna and Deputy Sports Director Tim Moran. Also features John Wyskiel, Adam Kosobud, and Christian Ballenger
