- Jack Keil Wolf
Dr. Jack Keil Wolf is a noted American researcher in
information theory andcoding theory .Wolf was born in
Newark, New Jersey , received his undergraduate degree from theUniversity of Pennsylvania in 1956 and his Ph.D. fromPrinceton University in 1960 for his thesis "On the Detection and Estimation Problem for Multiple Nonstaionary Random Processes". He held faculty appointments atNew York University 1963-1965, thePolytechnic Institute of Brooklyn 1965-1973 and theUniversity of Massachusetts at Amherst 1973-1984, and worked atRCA Laboratories andBell Laboratories . In 1984, he joined theUniversity of California, San Diego , where he applied communication and information theory tomagnetic storage . He has also held a part-time appointment atQualcomm since its formation in 1985.Wolf is a member of the
National Academy of Engineering , a Fellow of theAmerican Association for the Advancement of Science , and anIEEE Fellow . He was president of the IEEE Information Theory Society in 1974, and received the 1998 IEEEKoji Kobayashi Computers and Communication Award , the 2001 Information Theory Society'sClaude E. Shannon Award , and the 2004 IEEERichard W. Hamming Medal .References
