Political career

Haque joined Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), one of the two major political parties of Bangladesh at its early stage. Haque is the last elected president of Sylhet BNP, leading for more than twelve years.[2] He also served the party as it's organising secretary at central national committee.[citation needed]

Haque ran for the first Mayoral election of Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) against Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran (March 20, 2003).[3] Recently, he appears to be significant again in the field of nationalist politics by leading one of the fractions of bnp with some bigwigs in the committee.[4]

Haque expressed his interest to participate the mayoral election of SCC; and was considered as one of the most powerful candidates for the run.[1] however, he had to concede defeat to Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran.[citation needed]

Charity

Along side his political career, M A Haque is well known for his charitable deeds. He is one of the chief patrons of Haque Foundation, a charity that aims to promote higher education and proper sanitation in Balaganj Upazila Sylhet. Haque foundation works closely with local government and provides free medical facilities for maternity patients and child care and eye treatments for indigent elderly people.[5]

Personal life

According to the wealth-report submitted before Bangladesh Election Commission in 2008, Haque was the wealthiest candidate in the Mayoral run.[6] He is married with two children.
