Abbreviation : AYE; zh-sp|s=亚逸拉惹高速公路|p="Yàyìlārě Gāosù Gōnglù"; Malay: "Lebuhraya Ayer Rajah") extends from the western end of theEast Coast Parkway in the south ofSingapore toTuas in the west near theTuas Second Link toMalaysia . Together with theEast Coast Parkway , it forms a second east-west link to complement the role played by thePan Island Expressway .Construction on the expressway commenced in
1983 , with the first two phases completed by1988 . This section involved the widening of several existing roads along the way, such asAyer Rajah Road andUpper Ayer Rajah Road , as well as the construction of what was then the longest roadviaduct , theKeppel Viaduct , from where the eastern end of the expressway commences. This section extended for km to mi|num=14|abbr=no|spell=Commonwealth|precision=2|wiki=yes and ended at theTeban Flyover withJurong Town Hall Road .In
1998 [ [http://www.bbr.com.sg/AYE.html Ayer Rajah Expressway - Phases 2A and 2B ] ] , the expressway was extended toTuas from theTeban Flyover in conjunction with the opening of theTuas Second Link toJohor . This construction, which followed the alignment ofJalan Ahmad Ibrahim , involved the expansion of the existing road to match with the width of the rest of the AYE, construction of "filter" roads on both sides of the expressway (which eventually took the name of Jalan Ahmad Ibrahim), and the building of five flyovers and two underpasses.
