Iles Purpuraires are a set of small
island s off the western coast ofMorocco at the bay located atEssaouira . Theseisland s were settled in antiquity by thePhoenician s, chiefly to exploit certain marine resources and as apromontory fort . (Hogan, 2007) Roman occupation of western Morocco beginning in the 2nd century BC continued the use of theislet s, principally for manufacture of a purpledye from certain marineorganism s.Neolithic archaeological studies in this area indicateindigenous people s of western Morocco fished in this locale circa 2000 to 3000 BC.
