Irwin Fridovich

Irwin Fridovich

Irwin Fridovich is an American biochemist, most famous for his discovery, with his graduate student Joe M. McCord, of the enzyme superoxide dismutase. This discovery was an important milestone for the now well established idea, that oxygen free radicals (superoxide) can be formed in living organisms, which left unchecked, are incompatible with life.

Fridovich received numerous awards and recognitions for his work, including membership in the National Academy of Sciences.
