Four ships of the
Royal Navy have been named HMS "Queen Charlotte" after Charlotte, queen consort of KingGeorge III of the United Kingdom .*The first HMS|Queen Charlotte|1790|6 was a
first-rate ship of the line of 100 guns, built at Chatham and launched in1790 . She took part in several actions against the French navy, and flew the flag of AdmiralAlexander Hood, 1st Viscount Bridport , during theBattle of Groix . She caught fire and sank onMarch 17 1800 .*The second HMS|Queen Charlotte|1810|6 was a 104-gun
first-rate , launched in 1810, led theBombardment of Algiers on27 August 1816 , was renamed "Excellent" in 1859 and sold in 1892.*The third HMS|Queen Charlotte|1812|6 was a 16-gun sloop purchased in 1812 as the
brig "Adams" and captured by the United States onOctober 19 1813 following theBattle of Lake Erie . It was based at theProvincial Marine base atAmherstburg, Ontario .*The fourth "Queen Charlotte" was originally the 98-gun
