Tambaram is a suburb of Chennai situated 27 km south of the city in Tamil Nadu, India. This is an urban node. It has an average elevation of 32 metres (104 feet). Tambaram is a hub to all major destinations in south Tamil Nadu as it lies on the busy Chennai–Trichy national highway. The highway and the railway line from Chennai Egmore to Kanyakumari divide the town into East Tambaram and West Tambaram. The Chennai suburban railway network operates a suburban railway service from Chennai Beach to Tambaram.

Tambaram is considered to be a satellite town as it caters to the needs of hundreds of villages and suburbs like Padappai, Selaiyur, Agaram, Madambakkam, Mudichur and Mannivakkam. Tambaram is geographically divided into West, East and Tambaram Sanatorium. East Tambaram is well known for education since there are a lot of educational institutions present there. The prominent among them is the Madras Christian College.

History

Tambaram has its origins in a village of the same name which lay on the outskirts of Madras city. The T.B.Sanatorium in Tambaram is one of the oldest instutions of the kind in India. In 1936-37, the Madras Christian College campus was moved to Tambaram heralding development and accelerating the process of inclusion of Tambaram in Madras city.

The Municipality

Prior to 1964, Tambaram was a small panchayat. In 1964 it was constituted as Grade III Municipality comprising the Village Panchayats of Pulikoradu, Irumbliyur, Selaiyur. Due to rapid development and growth of the town commercially and residentially, the Municipality is now classified as a 'Selection Grade Municipality'. The population as per 2001 census is 1,33,667 besides a floating population of more than 1 lakh per day. The extent of the municipality is 20.72 km².

The most famous road in West Tambaram is the Shanmugam Road which is one of the busiest roads in the city. It is comparable to the Ranganathan Street in T.Nagar. The eastern part of the road is the commercial centre while the western end is called the Medical centre. Tambaram has famous hospitals and diagnostic centres like Hindu Mission Hospital, Deepam Hospital, Philips Hospital, AG Hospital etc,. It had three theatres called MR on the main road, National slightly off the main road till 1972, and the biggest of the three named Vidhya and National.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census [GR|India] , Tambaram had a population of 137,609. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Tambaram has an average literacy rate of 78%, higher than the national average of 65%: male literacy is 82%, and female literacy is 74%. In Tambaram, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Topography

Tambaram Railway Station divides Tambaram into East Tambaram and West Tambaram. East Tambaram (Selaiyur) and West Tambaram each have a police station. There is a District Munsiff Court at West Tambaram which deals with cases of Civil nature and a Judicial Magistrate's Court at the East Tambaram which deals with criminal cases. The Criminal Court is at Poondi Bazar just adjecent to Poondi Bazar Bus stop. Now a combined court complex is being built at G.S.T.Road, opposite to MEPZ, which is to be opened on 9th July 2008. Taluk Legal Services Authority, to render free legal services to the poor & needy and also to create legal awareness, is functioning at Tambaram Civil Court. Civil Court Judge is the Chairman of the Taluk Legal Services Authority. At present one Mr.N.Ramesh is the District Munsif at Tambaram who is rendering good legal service to the poor.
