- K-Def
K-Def is a
New Jersey basedhip hop producer/DJ who has been actively involved in the music industry since the early 90s. He has recently produced music for artists such asGhostface Killah andPuff Daddy . K-Def earned critical praise early in his career for his work withMarley Marl on the classic album "Here Come the Lords " by the rap group,Lords of the Underground [ [http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:3bftxqugldje~T0 allmusic ((( K-Def > Overview ))) ] ] . He was also member of the duoReal Live , who released one album "" on Big Beat Records in1996 . Since then he has crafted a respectable discography of his own, earning him the respect of his peers and fans alike.
K-Def is mostly known for his blues/soul sampling style, which of late has come back in vogue among current hip-hop artists and producers. While the majority of his early-mid 90s productions were produced using the Akai MPC sampler/sequencer, around 1997 he started incorporating the computer into his work flow, and now exclusively uses a software based setup. “To set myself apart from other producers & artists, I had to challenge myself in becoming proficient in using Logic Pro Audio, Cubase, and Reason. The only reason I’m still here making music is because I ventured into this world and didn’t look back”. With this knowledge he is able to re-create samples and produce original pieces of music.
In 2004 K-Def kept his name relevant by producing the standout track, "Its Over" on the Ghostface Killah release, "The Pretty Toney Album" (Def Jam). He kept the ball rolling by contributing tracks to another Ghostface project "Theodore Unit" and Ol' Dirty Bastard's "The Osirus Mixtape". He was a contributor to Diddy's 2006 release, "Press Play," and in 2007 he produced a track on UGK’s latest album, “Underground Kingz.”
In 2006, K-Def decided to release an instrumental album called "Willie Boo Boo The Fool,” a tour-de-force in hip-hop production. This release pleased his fans and the critics, and the album was even cited on many year-end best music lists. The album was only available on CD and vinyl, and will be digitally re-released in 2008.
In 2008, K-Def released a collaborative EP with Dacapo, under the name The Program, called "The Article EP". [ [http://fromdabricks.com/2008/04/05/the-program-exclusive-new-k-def-ep/ FROM DA BRICKS » Blog Archive » The Program - New K-Def EP ] ]
