Part of a series about Places in Nova Scotia

Louisdale (2006 population: approx. 1,150) is a Canadian rural community in Richmond County, Nova Scotia. Located on Cape Breton Island at the centre of an Acadian region, Louisdale's motto is "The Heart of Richmond County". Louisdale's harbour is right in the middle of St. Peter's Bay and Isle Madame. Originally a fishing village, residents later took up farming. In 1856 the Acadians of the area built their first schoolhouse, 1.5 miles (2.5 km) from Louisdale, so that it could also serve the nearby Irish community of Grandique Ferry, a separate settlement until the 20th century. The Louisdale area was known as Barachois St. Louis in the 1890's. The name was changed by act of the provincial legislature on April 7,1905. The Act stated, " The settlement or district in the county of Richmond, now known as Barachois, St. Louis, shall hereafter be known and designated Louisdale".. Louisdale borders Grand Anse and Basin Road. It also borders Lennox Passage.
