The Prince's Charities

The Prince's Charities is the name that has been given by HRH The Prince of Wales to a group of charities and other organisations in which he has a particular interest. [ cite web|url=http://www.princeofwales.gov.uk/ |title= The Prince of Wales ] Sometimes The Prince's Charities group is referred to as consisting of 19 charities and on other occasions 21, depending on whether The Prince's Charities Foundation & the British Asian Trust are included. Most of the charities are independent of each other and all are run by their own boards who are responsible for the charities. The Prince of Wales is President of all the charities and founded 17 of them, but as President he is a figurehead and public face for the charities involved and has no legal responsibility. The Development of The Prince's Charities Group

During 2003/4 a small Charities Office was set up in the Office of the Prince of Wales. In 2004 Sir Tom Shebbeare took up the new position of Director of Charities to HRH the Prince of Wales, with particular responsibility for the development and good governance of the 16 operational charities in which HRH had a particular interest. By 2005 the group of 16 charities had been given a new identity, “The Prince’s Charities” and the Charities Office had developed new policies and procedures for the group. By 2007/8 the Charities Office at Clarence House employed the full time equivalent of 8.5 staff, with more staff being recruited.
