César Milstein andNiels K. Jerne , Köhler won theNobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1984, "for work on theimmune system and the production ofmonoclonal antibodies ". A portion of this research was performed at theBasel Institute for Immunology .In 1984 he became director of the
