Robert Burns ' home. As early as the 1870s, Burns admirers inAtlanta had been meeting in private homes to celebrate the birthday of the Scottish poet. The club was officially formed onJanuary 25 ,1896 , and plans for the house began shortly thereafter. Among the founders of the club was Joseph Jacobs, the Atlanta drug-store owner at whose storeCoca-Cola was first carbonated. The list of famous guests includesMargaret Mitchell andHarry Lauder . The club meets on the first Wednesday of each month, with special festivities, of course, on Burns's birthday. The building, (built in 1910 by architects Robert McWhirter and Thomas Morgan) is located just south of the
East Atlanta neighborhood inAtlanta , on Alloway Place. The house is a close replica of Burns' cottage inAlloway ,Scotland ; however, the Burns House has added a small modern kitchen, restrooms, and porch to the rear of the house, and an assembly room takes the place of the original barn. The building, which was redesigned in 1969 to improve the resemblance to the original, has been on theNational Register of Historic Places since 1983.References
