- Kicks Like a Mule
Kicks Like A Mule is a rave/electronic music duo consisting of Richard Russell and Nick Halkes. Their first single “The Bouncer” was a UK Top 10 chart hit when it was released in 1992. Although both Halkes and Russell worked at the
XL Recordings label at the time of the singles release (XL being run by Russell to this day), it was released onRebel MC ’s independent Tribal Bass label. Kicks Like a Mule were also responsible for the remix of Awesome 3’s “Don’t Go”, and produced the song “Pass the Rizla” byLondon Posse on their album “Gangster Chronicle” (recently voted the most important UK hip hop album of all time inHip Hop Connection magazine). Their second single “Number One” was also released on the Tribal Bass label. As “Lifelike” Russell and Halkes also recorded the song “Lifelike” which was released on theffrr label . Although this was meant to be the first fruits of an album project the album never materialised. After a fifteen year hiatus, in which time Halkes launched the successfulPositiva and Incentive dance labels and Russell signed acts includingThe White Stripes andDizzee Rascal to XL, the duo returned with an “answer-cover” ofThe Klaxons “Gravitys Rainbow” (The Klaxons having first covered “The Bouncer”) recorded at Russells home studio "The Rock". Kicks Like A Mule have also remixed the song “XR2” from the M.I.A album “Kala” and the Top 10 dance record "I Found You" byAxwell . Having been a popular DJ’ing duo at the time of “The Bouncer”s release, the pair have recently DJ'd at Chalk,Ministry of Sound andBestival .External links
