1984 Cameroonian Palace Guard Revolt
- 1984 Cameroonian Palace Guard Revolt
The Cameroonian Palace Guard Revolt was an attempt to seize political power by presidential palace guards in Cameroon, starting on April 6, 1984 and ending several days later.
Dissident members of the presidential palace guard in Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon, were apparently prompted to rebel by an order by the Cameroonian President Paul Biya. The southern Christian president ordered a transfer of all palace guards who came from the predominantly Muslim north of the country. After several days of heavy fighting, Biya's soldiers won victory over the rebels, with at least 500 persons killed. More than 1,000 accused dissdents were arrested shortly after - 35 of them immediately sentenced to death and executed. The government declared a six-month-long state of emergency in Yaounde and the surrounding region. Biya went on to continually win re-election for terms extending to 2011.
