Centro Legal de la Raza is a grassroots law and community development center. Since its founding in 1969, Centro Legal has provided free, bilingual, and culturally appropriate legal, education and advocacy services for low-income, Latino and immigrant communities in the East Bay region of Northern California.
Services
Centro Legal de la Raza provides legal services in the areas of housing law for low-income tenants, employment law for low-wage workers, immigration law, consumer protection law, workman's compensation law, and some family law, including assistance for victims of domestic violence. Centro Legal de la Raza is also home to the high school program called The Youth Law Academy. The Youth Law Academy is a project that combines after-school programming, academic support, mentorship opportunities with local judges and attorneys, internship opportunities, college preparation and intensive SAT preparation for local high school youth.
Centro Legal de la Raza supports a day laborer project called Lucha Unida del Jornalero (United Struggle of Day Laborers). Lucha Unida is an association of Oakland day laborers who have come together to advance economic, civil and human rights issues for day laborers.
Finally, Centro Legal de la Raza has launched a Workforce Development Project that provides job development, job readiness and financial literacy training for members of the community.
