Herman A. Berliner

Dr. Herman A. Berliner is the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs of Hofstra University [ [http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9804E1D91331F931A25751C1A9629C8B63 NYT article] ] .. He was appointed provost of Hofstra University in 1990.

Beginnings

Dr. Berliner joined Hofstra University in 1970 as an assistant professor of economics after having earned a Ph.D. in economics from the City University of New York Graduate School. He was awarded tenure in 1975, promoted to associate professor in 1978 and to professor in 1985. As a faculty member, Dr. Berliner taught economics courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, and served on a number of doctoral dissertation committees for the education school.

Posts Held

Dr. Berliner has held a number of administrative positions, including interim dean and dean of the School of Business (1980-1982 and 1983-1989), associate provost and associate dean of faculties (1978-1983), acting dean of the School of Education (1983-1984), associate dean of University Advisement (1975-1976) and assistant provost (1976-1977). As dean of the School of Business, he helped establish the Business Research Institute, the Dean's Advisory Board, the Hofstra Business Review, In Business, and the Study Abroad Program at Erasmus University in Amsterdam (since defunct). Dr. Berliner contributed to the establishment of the university's mandatory Course and Teacher Evaluation Program, the Honors Program, the Peer Teaching Program and the University Tutorial Program.

Establishments

Provost Berliner played a vital role in the establishment of the School of Communication and the School for University Studies, the first new Schools established at the university since 1970.

Conferences

Dr. Berliner oversaw four major scholarly conferences at Hofstra, including Hofstra University's 50th Anniversary Celebration, a convocation and conference on "Higher Education Today and Tomorrow", "The Evolution of Education in Collegiate Schools of Business: Past, Present and Future" [ [http://eric.ed.gov/ERICWebPortal/custom/portlets/recordDetails/detailmini.jsp?_nfpb=true&_&ERICExtSearch_SearchValue_0=ED181802&ERICExtSearch_SearchType_0=no&accno=ED181802 Conference Proceedings] ] and conferences on "Chocolate: Food of the Gods," and "Money: Lure, Lore and Liquidity."
